EDITORS COMMENTS
Alas for her that met me in that haunted garden, where the trees bore witness to our parting and the crinoline-clad lady in Victorian elegance stood, lost in her grief. This evocative illustration by Florence Harrison captures the poignant scene from Alfred, Lord Tennyson's poem "Maud," specifically the lyric "Alas for her that met me in the quiet of the night, and hid her face among the roses lest I should see her tears." The image transports us back to the 19th century, where the lady's crinoline dress, the trees with their full leaves, and the shrubs in bloom create a vivid tableau of a bygone era. The trees, with their gnarled trunks and reaching branches, seem to be the silent guardians of the garden, bearing witness to the woman's sorrow. The woman, with her downcast eyes and outstretched arms, appears lost in her thoughts, her tears falling like raindrops onto the roses at her feet. The illustration, created around 1920, adds a layer of depth and emotion to Tennyson's already powerful words, making it a timeless piece of art and literature.
