EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken at the prestigious Roehampton Club in 1938, features three tennis legends of the 1930s: Alice Marble, Jean Borotra, and Mrs. Sarah Palfrey Fabyan. Alice Marble, the American tennis sensation, is seen in the center, holding a tennis racket. Marble was the first woman to achieve the Grand Slam, winning both the US Open and Wimbledon singles titles in the same year, a remarkable feat she accomplished in 1939. In addition to her singles titles, Marble also claimed the ladies doubles and mixed doubles championships at Wimbledon in 1937. Her trailblazing spirit extended beyond the court as she advocated for the acceptance of black and homosexual tennis players, paving the way for a more inclusive sporting community. To Marble's left is Jean Borotra, the French tennis star, affectionately known as the 'Bounding Basque.' Borotra's athleticism and agility on the court were unmatched, earning him the nickname. Borotra's signature beret adds a touch of French flair to the image. His impressive tennis career included winning the French Championships singles title a record seven times and the Davis Cup with France in 1931 and 1932. The elegant Mrs. Sarah Palfrey Fabyan, a tennis enthusiast, is seen on the right of the photograph, engaging in conversation with the tennis stars. This photograph is a testament to the rich history of tennis in the 1930s and the remarkable figures who shaped the sport.
