EDITORS COMMENTS
Anastasia Robinson, Countess of Peterborough (circa 1692-1755), was a renowned English soprano who later in her career became a celebrated contralto in the operas of George Frideric Handel. This portrait, believed to have been taken in the 1720s, showcases the Countess in the prime of her vocal and aesthetic prowess. Dressed in an elegant oval frame, the image reveals Robinson's striking features, with her expressive eyes and delicate facial structure. Her low-neckline gown, adorned with intricate lace and ruffles, highlights her graceful neck and shoulders. Robinson's career began in the late 1710s when she made her debut as a soprano in Handel's opera "Rinaldo." Her powerful and agile voice quickly gained her recognition, and she went on to perform in several other Handel operas, including "Almira," "Tamerlano," and "Ariodante." In the 1730s, she transitioned to the contralto role in Handel's "Serse," marking a significant shift in her vocal range and artistic identity. The Countess of Peterborough's versatility and dedication to her craft earned her a lasting place in the annals of classical music history. Her performances were celebrated for their emotional depth, technical mastery, and captivating stage presence. This portrait, a testament to her beauty and talent, continues to captivate audiences and inspire admiration over 300 years later.
