EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts Antifever fontinalis moss, also known as Fontinalis antipyretica or Fontanale incombustibule. The illustration was created in 1837 as part of Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Science, published in Florence, Italy. The meticulously detailed engraving was drawn and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840). Turpin is celebrated for his exceptional botanical illustrations and is considered one of the greatest botanical artists of the 19th century. The moss in this illustration, Antifever fontinalis, is a species of Fontinalis, commonly known as common cotton moss or bush moss. It is a small, non-vascular plant that forms dense, green mats in damp environments. The moss is characterized by its setaceous (hair-like) leaves and tiny, white flowers. The illustration also includes other related moss species, such as Brunia lanuginosa and Berzelia lanuginosa. The intricate engraving technique used in this print, known as stipple engraving, involves the use of small dots to create shading and texture. The addition of hand-coloring further enhances the vibrancy and realism of the illustration. Antifever fontinalis moss has historical significance in botany and medicine. It was believed to have antipyretic (fever-reducing) properties and was used in traditional medicine to treat fever and inflammation. Today, it is still used in some parts of the world for medicinal purposes, and it is also valued for its ornamental and ecological importance in damp environments.
