EDITORS COMMENTS
Arlington House, once the grand residence of Henry Bennet, 1st Earl of Arlington, stands proudly in this 1875 photograph. Constructed in 1675, the historic building was erected on the very site where the southern wing of Buckingham Palace now stands. At the time of its construction, Arlington House was a magnificent structure, reflecting the opulence and grandeur of the English aristocracy during the Restoration period. Henry Bennet, a favorite of King Charles II, was a man of great influence and power. He served as Lord Chamberlain and Lord Privy Seal, and was a key figure in the court of the monarch. Arlington House was not only a symbol of Bennet's wealth and status, but also a place of entertainment and political intrigue. The building's elegant facade, with its grand columns and intricate stonework, is a testament to the architectural prowess of the time. The gardens surrounding the house were equally impressive, featuring fountains, statues, and elaborate topiary. By the late 19th century, however, Arlington House had been demolished, and its site was earmarked for the expansion of Buckingham Palace. This photograph captures a rare glimpse into the past, offering a glimpse of a bygone era and a reminder of the rich history that once occupied the land where the southern wing of Buckingham Palace now stands.
