This photograph captures the moment of arrest of Melton Prior, a renowned special artist for Illustrated London News, as he was taken into custody by Austrian police in Ragusa (now Dubrovnik), Croatia in 1875. Melton Prior, a British artist, was in the region covering the Herzegovina uprising against Austro-Hungarian rule. The 1870s were a period of intense political instability in the Balkans, and Prior's sketches and reports provided invaluable insight into the events unfolding in the region for the London audience.
