EDITORS COMMENTS
Arthur III, Duke of Brittany and Earl of Richmond, also known as Artus de Bretagne, Duke of Richemont, and Connetable de France, is depicted in this stunning handcoloured lithograph by Leopold Massard. The portrait, taken from Roger de Gaignières portfolio VI 48, is a captivating representation of the Duke during the late Middle Ages. Born in 1393, Arthur III was a significant figure in French and Breton history. He became Duke of Brittany at the young age of five, following the death of his father, John IV. In 1424, he was appointed Constable of France by King Charles VII, a position he held until his death in 1458. The Duke is shown here wearing the regal attire of the time, including a long, flowing tunic, a fur-trimmed mantle, and a conical hat adorned with feathers. The intricate details of the Duke's clothing are beautifully rendered in the lithograph, showcasing the skill and artistry of Leopold Massard. Arthur III was a powerful and influential figure during the Hundred Years War between England and France. He played a crucial role in defending French territories against English invasion, earning him the title of Connetable de France. His military prowess and diplomatic skills helped to secure French victories and expand French influence in Europe. Despite his military accomplishments, Arthur III was also known for his patronage of the arts and his support of scholars and writers. He established the Château de Suscinio as a center for learning and culture, attracting scholars from all over Europe. This handcoloured lithograph is a testament to the enduring legacy of Arthur III, Duke of Brittany and Earl of Richmond, a man who left an indelible mark on French and Breton history.
