This exquisitely hand-colored copperplate print depicts the Atlantic halibut, Hippoglossus hippoglossus, also known as the common halibut or the European halibut. A large and flat-bodied fish, the Atlantic halibut is a master of camouflage, with one side of its body a dark brown or olive color and the other side a lighter, almost white hue. This remarkable adaptation allows the halibut to blend seamlessly into its rocky, sandy, or muddy ocean floor habitat. Sadly, this magnificent creature is now considered endangered.
