EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored copperplate print depicts the Atlantic halibut, Hippoglossus hippoglossus, also known as the common halibut or the European halibut. A large and flat-bodied fish, the Atlantic halibut is a master of camouflage, with one side of its body a dark brown or olive color and the other side a lighter, almost white hue. This remarkable adaptation allows the halibut to blend seamlessly into its rocky, sandy, or muddy ocean floor habitat. Sadly, this magnificent creature is now considered endangered. Overfishing, bycatch, and habitat destruction have taken a heavy toll on Atlantic halibut populations. Once abundant in the North Atlantic Ocean and in European and North American waters, their numbers have declined dramatically. This beautiful illustration is a testament to the natural history of the Atlantic halibut, created during a time when science and art were deeply intertwined. It was drawn and engraved by Edward Donovan for his seminal work, "The Natural History of British Fishes," published between 1802 and 1808 by Donovan and F.C. and J. Rivington in London. Donovan's meticulous attention to detail and his commitment to accurately recording the natural world make this print an invaluable resource for ichthyologists, zoologists, and marine enthusiasts alike. As we admire the intricate lines and vibrant colors of this print, let us remember the importance of protecting the Atlantic halibut and its habitat, ensuring their survival for future generations to marvel at their beauty and wonder.
