EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored engraving, created by Fournier after an illustration by Edouard Travies for Charles d'Orbigny's Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle (Universal Dictionary of Natural History), published in Paris in 1849, showcases two intriguing waterbirds: the Baillon's Crake (Porzana pusilla) and the Great Northern Loon (Gavia immer). The Baillon's Crake, also known as the Little Crake or the Swamphen, is a small, elusive marsh bird native to Africa, Madagascar, and southern Europe. With its cryptic plumage, this crake blends effortlessly into its wetland habitat, making it a challenging bird to spot for even the most dedicated ornithologist. The Baillon's Crake is depicted in the foreground of the image, standing on a lily pad, its long, slender legs and distinctive, downward-pointing bill clearly visible. In the background, the majestic Great Northern Loon, also known as the Great Northern Diver, graces the water. This large, aquatic bird is a resident of the northern hemisphere, with a wide distribution across Canada, Alaska, Greenland, and northern Europe. The Great Northern Loon is an accomplished swimmer and diver, with a unique, elegant posture when at rest on the water. Its dark, speckled plumage and distinctive, large, yellow eyes are striking features of this bird, which is shown in the image with its head turned towards the viewer, giving a curious and intense gaze. The intricate detail and beautiful coloration of this hand-colored engraving are a testament to the skill and artistry of the illustrator and engraver. The image provides a fascinating glimpse into the natural history of these two intriguing waterbirds, capturing their unique characteristics and beauty for future generations to appreciate.
