EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured lithograph showcases the renowned bass-baritone singer, Chaix, in the striking role of the Marquis in Giacomo Meyerbeer and Eugène Scribe's opera, "La Barcarolle," first performed at the Théâtre-Italien in Paris in 1843 and later adapted for the Opéra-Comique in 1845. The image, taken from Victor Dollet's Galerie Dramatique: Costumes des Théâtres de Paris, published in 1845, was illustrated by Alexandre Lacauchie. Chaix's powerful and expressive voice brought the Marquis' complex character to life on stage, making him a favorite among opera-goers. Dressed in the elegant and opulent costume of the Marquis, complete with a red cape and a golden coronet, Chaix exudes confidence and authority. The serene waters of the Venetian lagoon in the background serve as a tranquil contrast to the intensity of the Marquis' character. The intricate details of the handcoloured lithograph, from the intricate patterns on the Marquis' costume to the delicate reflections on the water, add to the overall dramatic effect of the image. This print is a testament to the artistry of both Chaix and Lacauchie, capturing a moment in time from the rich history of French opera.
