EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts Bayberry, Morella pubescens, also known as the Bay-rum tree, Candleberry, Sweet Gale, Wax-myrtle, or Great Tongue-leaved Spearwort. The illustration is taken from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Sciences, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The engraving was created by Mlle le Roy, with direction from the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840). Bayberry is a shrub or small tree native to North America, with a wide distribution ranging from the Atlantic coast to the Great Plains. The plant is characterized by its lanceolate, evergreen leaves and clusters of small, white or pinkish flowers. The most distinctive feature of Bayberry is its waxy, aromatic berries, which were historically used for making candles, perfumes, and medicinal remedies. The edible fruits of Bayberry were also used by indigenous peoples for food and medicine. The plant was valued for its diuretic, antiseptic, and anti-inflammatory properties. In Europe, the plant was introduced as an ornamental and was used in horticulture for its attractive foliage and fragrant flowers. Turpin is considered one of the greatest French botanical illustrators of the 19th century, known for his meticulous attention to detail and accurate representation of his subjects. This beautiful engraving is a testament to his skill and the advanced techniques of the time, which allowed for the creation of intricate and lifelike botanical illustrations.
