EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored lithograph showcases two stunningly beautiful sunbird species, the Beautiful Sunbird (Cinnyris pulchella) and the Southern Double-collared Sunbird (Cinnyris chalybeus). The image is taken from Th. Lejeune's Complete Works of Buffon, published in Brussels in 1837, and was expertly crafted by the skilled hand of Burggraaff. The Beautiful Sunbird, also known as the Tiny Sunbird or the Violet-backed Sunbird, is a small bird native to Central and East Africa. Males of this species are characterized by their iridescent violet-blue backs, bright orange-red chests, and long, curved bills. Females, on the other hand, have a duller plumage with a brown back and a yellow-orange chest. The Southern Double-collared Sunbird, also known as the Collared Sunbird or the Southern Sunbird, is a common sunbird found in Southern Africa. Males of this species are easily identified by their distinctive black collars and chest bands, contrasting with their bright yellow underparts. Females have a similar coloration but lack the black collars and chest bands. Sunbirds are known for their long, curved bills, which they use to extract nectar from flowers. They are important pollinators in their ecosystems and are often found in areas with a high density of flowering plants. This beautiful and intricately detailed lithograph not only showcases the stunning physical attributes of these two sunbird species but also highlights their important role in the natural world.
