EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured woodblock engraving is an illustration of Bird Vetch, Vicia cracca, and Yellow Sweet Clover, Melilotus officinalis, taken from the Krauterbuch or Herbal by Adam Lonicer, published in Frankfurt in 1557. The intricately detailed image showcases the distinctive features of these two leguminous plants, both of which were valued for their medicinal properties during the 16th century. Bird Vetch, also known as Lotus sylvestris or Quarta Quinta Vicia, is depicted on the left side of the print. Its small, pea-like flowers bloom in clusters and are characterized by their pink to purple color and distinctive, curved seed pods. The plant was used in traditional medicine to treat various ailments, including wounds, ulcers, and digestive issues. On the right side of the print is the Yellow Sweet Clover, Melilotus officinalis, also known as Lotus Quintus or Quinta Vicia. This plant is easily identified by its yellow, pea-like flowers and feathery seed heads. It was used in traditional medicine for its diuretic and anti-inflammatory properties, as well as to alleviate respiratory issues and relieve pain. This botanical illustration is a beautiful example of the detailed and accurate work produced during the Renaissance period. The print is from a 17th century pirate edition or atlas of illustrations only, with captions in Latin, Greek, French, Italian, German, and English manuscript. The handcolouring adds an additional layer of beauty to the already intricate engraving, making it a valuable addition to any botanical or historical collection.
