EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored steel engraving depicts the Black-crowned Tityra, scientifically known as Tityra inquisitor, also referred to as the Rufous-eared Black-cap or Psaris erythrogenys. The image is taken from Sir William Jardine's Naturalist's Library: Ornithology, specifically the volume dedicated to Flycatchers. The illustration was created by the renowned naturalist and illustrator, William Swainson, and the engraving was expertly executed by William Lizars in Edinburgh in 1836. The Black-crowned Tityra is a striking bird native to Central and South America. The male is easily identified by its black crown, rufous ear coverts, and orange-red eyes. The female, on the other hand, has a brown crown and a grayish-brown eye ring. Both sexes have a black bill, a white underbelly, and a long, curved tail. The Black-crowned Tityra is a member of the Tityra family, which is part of the larger Tityraeidae family. These birds are known for their agile hunting skills and their distinctive calls, which sound like a series of rapid, high-pitched notes. They are omnivorous, feeding on fruits, insects, and small vertebrates. This beautiful engraving not only showcases the intricate details of the Black-crowned Tityra's appearance but also captures the essence of its unique character. The use of hand-coloring adds a vibrant and lifelike quality to the image, making it a true masterpiece of natural history art.
