EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured stipple engraving depicts the Black Elder or European Elderberry tree, Sambucus nigra, in all its botanical glory. The intricate detail and vibrant colours bring to life the various textures and features of this fascinating plant. The elderberry tree is a common sight in Europe, North America, and parts of Asia, growing to heights of up to 15 meters. Its elegant, pinnate leaves are arranged oppositely on the stem, and its small, white, fragrant flowers bloom in large clusters in late spring. These flowers give way to clusters of dark, juicy berries in late summer, which are rich in vitamin C and antioxidants. The elderberry tree has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in Europe, where it has been used to treat a variety of ailments, from the common cold to influenza. The tree's bark and berries have been used to make teas, tinctures, and syrups, and its leaves have been used for making a medicinal oil. This beautiful engraving is a testament to the artistry and scientific curiosity of the past. It was created by Mlle. Brenet, based on an original illustration by Pierre-Joseph Redoute, and published as part of Henri Louis Duhamel du Monceau's Traite des Arbres et Arbustes (Treatise on Trees and Shrubs) in Paris between 1804 and 1819. The work was a groundbreaking botanical publication, featuring over 1,000 meticulously illustrated plant species, and remains an important resource for botanical research today.
