EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored lithograph, taken from Carl Hoffmann's esteemed "Book of the World" published in Stuttgart in 1849, showcases two magnificent gamebirds of Europe: the Black Grouse (Tetrao tetrix) and the Western Capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus). The Black Grouse, also known as the Blackgame, is a large, ground-dwelling bird with black plumage, distinctive white wing patches, and a red eye. The male, depicted on the left, is adorned with an impressive, fan-like plume on its nape, which it displays during mating rituals. The Western Capercaillie, on the right, is the largest grouse species in Europe, with a striking appearance featuring a brown body, black and white striped head, and red wattles under its eyes. The female, which is not illustrated here, is brown with a speckled pattern, making it well-camouflaged in its forest habitat. Both species are native to Europe and are important gamebirds, with the Black Grouse being more widespread and the Western Capercaillie being found primarily in Scandinavia and Central Europe. These birds inhabit forested areas, with the Black Grouse preferring open woodlands and the Western Capercaillie favoring dense coniferous forests. This beautiful illustration, created during the height of the ornithological era, serves as an educational and artistic testament to the natural history of these fascinating birds. The intricate details and vibrant colors of the lithograph capture the essence of these birds, allowing us to appreciate their beauty and admire their unique characteristics.
