EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured steel engraving depicts the majestic Black Wildebeest or White-tailed Gnu, Connochaetes gnou, as illustrated by James Stewart for Sir William Jardine's Naturalists Library in Edinburgh, published in 1836. The intricate detail of the engraving, produced by Lizars, beautifully captures the distinctive features of this large antelope. The Black Wildebeest, also known as the White-tailed Gnu or the Common Wildebeest, is a large herbivore native to the African savannah. Males can weigh up to 500 kg and stand at over a metre tall at the shoulder. They are easily recognizable by their large, curved horns, which can reach up to 1 metre in length, and their distinctive white tails, which can measure up to 80 cm. The Black Wildebeest is a social animal, living in herds that can number in the thousands. They are grazers, and their diet consists mainly of grasses, but they will also browse on shrubs and leaves when grass is scarce. They are well adapted to the harsh conditions of the African savannah, with their strong legs and large hooves allowing them to move easily across rough terrain. Despite their impressive size and strength, Black Wildebeest are preyed upon by a variety of predators, including lions, hyenas, and cheetahs. They are also hunted by humans for their meat, which is considered a delicacy in many parts of Africa. This engraving is a testament to the beauty and diversity of the natural world, and serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving these magnificent creatures and their habitats for future generations to enjoy.
