EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured lithograph by Joseph Strutt, titled "Tilting in Row-Boats," depicts an exhilarating scene from the 14th century, showcasing the knightly sport of tilting. Two gallant knights, clad in intricately designed helmets and chainmail armour, engage in a fierce competition on unstable rowboats. The knights, each holding a long lance in one hand and a shield in the other, tilt towards each other, attempting to dislodge their opponent with a well-aimed strike. The boats rock precariously, adding an extra layer of challenge and excitement to the game. Tilting was a popular tournament event during the Middle Ages, often held as part of larger jousting tournaments. The objective was to knock your opponent off their boat, demonstrating both skill and strength. The sport required a great deal of balance and agility, as the knights had to maintain their position on the small, unstable vessels while wielding their weapons. This illustration, taken from Strutt's comprehensive work "Sports and Pastimes of the People of England," published in 1876, offers a fascinating glimpse into the rich history of medieval games and sports. The intricate details and vibrant colours bring the scene to life, transporting us back in time to witness the thrill and excitement of a tilting match.
