EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving depicts the Bobak Marmot, scientifically known as Marmota bobak, also referred to as the Bobac Marmot, Arctomys bobac, or simply the European Marmot. The image is based on an illustration by Charles Hamilton Smith and was engraved by J. Scott for Edward Griffiths' seminal work, "The Animal Kingdom" by the Baron Cuvier, published in London by Whittaker in 1825. The Bobak Marmot is a large, ground-dwelling rodent native to Europe and Asia. They are well-adapted to their alpine and subalpine habitats, with thick fur coats that provide insulation against the cold climate. These marmots are social animals, living in burrow systems that can extend up to 10 meters in length, with multiple entrances and chambers. They are herbivores, feeding on a variety of vegetation, including grasses, herbs, and shrubs. The intricately detailed engraving showcases the Marmot's distinctive features, including its large, rounded ears, short, bushy tail, and powerful hind legs. The hand-coloring adds depth and texture to the image, bringing out the rich hues of the Marmot's fur and highlighting its expressive eyes. This engraving is an important historical record of the Bobak Marmot and a testament to the natural history illustration techniques of the early 19th century. It provides a glimpse into the natural world of over 200 years ago and serves as a reminder of the importance of documenting and preserving the natural heritage of our planet.
