The date is June 20, 1935, and the setting is Heston Aerodrome in England. The Lewins had spent a pleasant holiday in their native country, but now it was time to return to their African homestead. Brigadier-General A.C. Lewin, a distinguished military officer and aviation enthusiast, is smartly dressed in his uniform, complete with peaked cap and Sam Browne belt. His wife, Mrs Lewin, looks elegant in a long-sleeved dress and hat, as she stands beside him, waving farewell. In the background, their plane, an elegant biplane, waits on the tarmac, its engine idling, ready for takeoff. The Lewins were no strangers to aviation. Brigadier-General Lewin had been an early pioneer of aviation in Kenya, and had played a significant role in establishing the first air force in the country. He was an accomplished pilot and had flown many missions during World War I. Mrs Lewin, too, was an aviator, and had learned to fly during their time in England. Together, they had made numerous flights across Africa, exploring the vast continent from the air. As they bid their loved ones farewell, the Lewins knew that they were embarking on another adventure. The journey back to Kenya would take them over the Mediterranean Sea, the Sahara Desert, and the vast plains of Africa. It was a long and challenging flight, but the Lewins were experienced pilots, and they looked forward to the thrill of the journey. With the wind in their hair and the sun on their faces, they took to the skies, leaving England behind and heading towards their home in Njoro, Kenya.
