EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured lithograph showcases six stunning nymph butterflies: Cynandra opis (Brilliant Nymph or Brimstone Nymph), Nymphalis afer (Nymphalis afer, Papilio Nymphalis alphaea, and Papilio Nymphalis doriclea), Euriphene doriclea (Doriclea Nymph), and Nymphalis doriclaea. Each butterfly is depicted both dorsally and ventrally, providing a comprehensive view of their intricate wing patterns. The Brilliant Nymph, Cynandra opis, is depicted in the upper left and right corners of the print. Its wings display a vibrant orange-yellow color with black veins and white spots. The Papilio Nymphalis alphaea and Doriclea Nymph, depicted in the upper center, exhibit contrasting color palettes. The Alphaea Nymph sports black wings with striking orange and white spots, while the Doriclea Nymph boasts a striking combination of black and red. The lower portion of the print features the Euriphene doriclea (Doriclea Nymph) and Nymphalis doriclaea. The Doriclea Nymph's wings are adorned with a beautiful blend of orange, black, and white, while the Nymphalis doriclaea showcases a predominantly black wing with orange and white spots. This exquisite lithograph is a part of John O. Westwood's new edition of Dru Drury's Illustrations of Exotic Entomology, published by Bohn, London, in 1837. The meticulous attention to detail and the use of handcolouring elevate the print, making it a remarkable piece of 19th-century entomological art.
