EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the exquisite Bristle Fern, Trichomanes elegans, also known as Feea polypodina. The image is taken from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Sciences, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was engraved by Stanghi, under the direction of the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840). Turpin is celebrated as one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century, known for his meticulous attention to detail and mastery of the stipple engraving technique. This particular illustration showcases the delicate intricacies of the fern's fronds, with their fine, bristle-like hairs, and the vibrant colors of its pinnules. The background of the print features a variety of marine organisms, including a coral (Chenendopora fungiformis), a sponge (Eudea clavata), a sea anemone (Chrysaora damaecornis), and several species of stony corals (Lochmaeosmilia radiata, Favosites alcyon, and Tabulate favosites). These additions provide context to the fern, highlighting the interconnectedness of various natural forms during the time of this publication. This illustration not only showcases the beauty of the Bristle Fern but also offers a glimpse into the natural history of the 19th century, when scientific exploration and documentation were at their height. The intricate details and vibrant colors of this print continue to inspire awe and appreciation for the natural world.
