13th 2007 Jack Lancs Mairie Major Para Plaque Unveiled Watson

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this poignant photograph, the Mayor of Putot en Auge, Normandy, stands proudly next to Nicole Asmant, a local resident instrumental in the establishment of the British 6th Airborne Memorial. The memorial board, which is situated outside the Mairie, was unveiled on the 6th of June, 2007, by Major Jack Watson MC, of the 13th (Lancs) Para Bn. Major Watson, who died on the 14th of April, 2011, at the age of 94, is also commemorated with a memorial plaque inside the Mairie. The memorial board acknowledges and details the liberation of Putot en Auge on the 18th and 19th of August, 1944. Particularly notable is the fierce fighting that took place amongst the houses and for the railway station. The brave soldiers of the 6th Airborne Division fought valiantly to secure the town from German occupation, making this a significant moment in the history of Putot en Auge and the wider Normandy region. The image captures a moment of unity and appreciation between the Mayor, Nicole Asmant, and the memory of Major Jack Watson, as they pay tribute to the sacrifices made by the British 6th Airborne Division during the liberation of Putot en Auge. The memorial serves as a reminder of the courage and determination shown by the soldiers during this pivotal moment in World War II history. Date: 2009.
