EDITORS COMMENTS
September 1939: A Farewell to the Old World - As the shadows of war lengthened over Europe, British soldiers in their full regalia marched towards their embarkation points for the Western Front. The date was just a few weeks after the outbreak of World War II, and the solemn procession was a poignant reminder of the impending conflict. Among the ranks of these brave men, a woman in a hat and coat could be seen, her expression a mixture of pride and sadness as she watched her loved ones disappear into the distance. The soldiers, resplendent in their traditional red coats, white helmets, and black boots, carried their weapons and equipment with a sense of determination and duty. However, it was the new addition to their uniforms that caught the attention of the photographers at Sphere magazine. The helmets, a relatively recent innovation in military technology, were designed to protect the soldiers from shrapnel and other projectiles. The helmet's distinctive shape, with its rounded top and distinctive chinstrap, would become a symbol of the British military during the war years. As the soldiers moved forward, the woman in the crowd could only watch, her heart heavy with the knowledge that the old world was fading away, and a new, uncertain one was taking its place. The soldiers, too, knew that their lives would never be the same again, but they marched on, ready to defend their country and its values, no matter the cost.
