EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the aftermath of the daring raid on Zeebrugge harbor in Belgium by British submarine C3 during the First World War. The image, taken between 1914 and 1918, depicts the submarine engulfed in flames and smoke as it lies destroyed on the mole, or breakwater, of the harbor. The attack, which took place on April 23, 1918, was part of a larger British naval operation aimed at disrupting German U-boat activity in the North Sea. Submarine C3, commanded by Lieutenant Commander C. R. F. Crombie, was one of six British submarines that successfully penetrated the heavily defended harbor and laid mines in the approaches to the mole. The explosion in the photograph is believed to have been caused by a German mine or counter-attack, which detonated as the submarine was leaving the harbor after completing its mission. The photograph provides a stark reminder of the dangerous and destructive nature of warfare during this period. The flames and smoke rising from the submarine are mirrored in the calm waters of the harbor, creating a haunting and otherworldly scene. The mole, which was designed to protect the harbor from naval attacks, now serves as a backdrop to the destruction wrought by the very weapons it was intended to prevent. The photograph also underscores the bravery and determination of the British submarine crews who carried out such dangerous missions during the First World War. Despite the risks involved, they played a crucial role in disrupting German naval operations and helping to turn the tide of the war in the North Sea.
