EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored engraving depicts a Brown Brocket Deer, Mazama gouazoubira, also known as Bira roe or Cervus nemorivagus. The image is based on a specimen housed in the Frankfurt Museum and was illustrated by Charles Hamilton Smith, with the engraving executed by Thomas Landseer. The work was published in Edward Griffiths' seminal natural history text, "The Animal Kingdom," edited by the renowned French zoologist, Baron Georges Cuvier, in 1827. The Brown Brocket Deer is a small ruminant native to the forests of Central and South America. They are characterized by their short, stocky legs, which provide excellent camouflage in their wooded habitats. Their coat is a rich, uniform brown color, with a white underbelly and a distinctive white spot on their rump. These deer are agile climbers and are able to navigate the dense forest canopy with ease. The Brown Brocket Deer is an important species in the natural history of the Americas, and its inclusion in "The Animal Kingdom" reflects the growing interest in the natural world during the 19th century. The meticulous attention to detail in this hand-colored engraving is a testament to the high standards of scientific illustration during this period, and it remains an impressive example of the artistry and scholarship of the time.
