EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored engraving depicts a Brown Brocket Deer, Mazama gouazoubira (Apara), a small ruminant native to the forests of Central and South America. The deer in this illustration was based on a specimen housed in the Prince Maximilian of Wied Museum, and was rendered by the skilled hand of Charles Hamilton Smith. The image is taken from Edward Griffiths' seminal work, "The Animal Kingdom" published by Whittaker in London in 1827, under the direction of the renowned naturalist, Baron Cuvier. The Brown Brocket Deer, also known as the Apara Brocket or the Southern Brocket, is characterized by its short, stocky build, reddish-brown coat, and distinctive white spots on its sides. This deer species is well adapted to the dense forests of its habitat, with a broad, flat head and small, simple antlers that are typically only present in the males. Brown Brocket Deer are herbivores, feeding primarily on leaves, twigs, and fruits. They are also agile climbers, able to navigate the forest canopy with ease. Due to their small size and elusive nature, they are often overlooked in the vast realm of deer species. However, their importance in the ecosystem cannot be understated, as they play a crucial role in maintaining the balance of their forest habitats. This beautiful engraving is a testament to the meticulous attention to detail and scientific accuracy that characterized the natural history illustrations of the 19th century. It serves as a reminder of the rich biodiversity of the world and the importance of preserving and studying the natural world for future generations.
