EDITORS COMMENTS
In the bustling streets of Madras, India, in the year 1925, a woman, driven by the belief in the supernatural and the promise of hidden treasure, made a decision that would forever be etched in the annals of history. Encouraged by her family and a local magician, she kidnapped a baby and buried him alive, hoping to coax a goddess to reveal the location of the treasure. The practice of burying children alive, although rare, was not unheard of in certain communities in India during that era. Believers thought that the goddess Mariamman, the mother goddess of fertility, would be appeased by such a sacrifice, and in return, would reveal the hidden treasure. The woman, with the help of the magician, carefully selected a baby, likely from a poor family, and carried out the ritual. The baby was wrapped in cloth and buried in a shallow grave, near a temple dedicated to Mariamman. The family and the magician then conducted a series of rituals, praying and offering sacrifices to the goddess. However, the plan went awry when news of the kidnapping reached the authorities. The woman and the magician were soon arrested and brought to justice. The baby was rescued, but unfortunately, he did not survive the ordeal. This photograph, taken in 1925, depicts the aftermath of the failed ritual. The image shows the shallow grave where the baby was buried, surrounded by the devastated family members and onlookers. The incident caused widespread outrage and led to a public outcry against such practices. It serves as a stark reminder of the deep-rooted beliefs and the extreme measures some would take in the pursuit of wealth and the supernatural. This historical photograph, from the extensive collection at Mary Evans Prints Online, offers a glimpse into a bygone era, revealing the complex interplay of faith, family, and the human desire for wealth and the unknown.
