EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored engraving, created by Fournier after an original illustration by Edouard Travies in Charles d'Orbigny's Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle (Universal Dictionary of Natural History), published in Paris in 1849, showcases two remarkable and vividly colored parrots: the extinct Carolina parakeet (Conuropsis carolinensis) and the eastern rosella (Platycercus eximius). The Carolina parakeet, native to the eastern United States, was once the only parrot species found north of Mexico. With its bright orange feathers, red face, and distinctive red, white, and black beak, this parakeet was a striking and iconic bird. Sadly, the Carolina parakeet became extinct in the late 19th century due to habitat loss and hunting. The eastern rosella, on the other hand, is still found in the wild today. Native to eastern Australia, this parrot boasts brilliant green plumage, with red underparts and a blue-grey face. The eastern rosella is known for its ability to mimic various sounds, making it a popular pet in its native region. This beautiful engraving serves as a reminder of the natural wonders that once graced our planet and those that continue to inspire us today. The intricate details and vibrant colors bring these two birds to life, showcasing their unique beauty and importance in the natural world.
