EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the enigmatic figure of Cecil John Rhodes (1853-1902), a British mining magnate and politician who dominated the southern African political landscape during the late 1800s. Rhodes is depicted here in formal attire, exuding an air of authority and confidence. At the time of this photograph, Rhodes had already made a significant impact on the region through his business ventures and political maneuverings. Born in Bishop's Stortford, England, Rhodes first arrived in South Africa in 1871, initially as a teacher before turning to mining. He made his fortune in diamonds and gold, founding the De Beers Mining Company and the Rhodesia Company, which would later become the British South Africa Company. Rhodes' business acumen and imperialist ambitions led him to become the Prime Minister of the Cape Colony from 1890 to 1896. During his tenure as Prime Minister, Rhodes pursued an aggressive expansionist policy, seeking to extend British control over the region. He famously stated, "I have a dream that when it please God I shall live to be 110 years old. I have an ambition that I shall govern the Cape Colony till I am 100, and after that rule Africa as high commissioner for England, and if possible, I wish I could live till I am 120, and then I could rule all the world." Despite his controversial policies and methods, Rhodes left an indelible mark on the history of southern Africa. His legacy continues to be debated, with some viewing him as a visionary statesman and entrepreneur, while others see him as an imperialist who exploited the resources and people of the region for personal gain.
