EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken from the pages of The Illustrated London News in November 1985, showcases four proposed plans for the construction of a Channel Tunnel, connecting England and France. At the time, the idea of a tunnel under the English Channel was not yet a reality, but the imagination and engineering prowess of various architects and engineers were already hard at work on potential designs. The first three plans depicted in this image were previously known, with the third being particularly noteworthy for its innovative use of a series of interconnected caverns and a monorail system to transport people and goods between the two shores. However, the fourth plan, revealed as an exclusive by The Illustrated London News, was a groundbreaking design that had not been made public before. This fourth proposal featured a twin-bore tunnel with a central service tunnel running between the two main tubes, allowing for the efficient movement of trains and maintenance personnel. The design also included a unique ventilation system, which would help regulate the temperature and air quality within the tunnel. The Channel Tunnel, also known as the Chunnel, was a visionary project that would eventually come to fruition in the late 1990s, revolutionizing transportation between Europe and the United Kingdom. This photograph serves as a fascinating glimpse into the early stages of the planning process, showcasing the innovative ideas and designs that were considered before the final solution was chosen.
