Born in Rome, Italy, Stuart was the claimant to the thrones of England, Scotland, and Ireland during the Jacobite rising of 1745. The son of the exiled James Francis Edward Stuart, the Old Pretender, Charles Edward Stuart was raised in France and received military training in the French army. The year 1745 saw the Young Pretender's daring attempt to regain the British thrones. Landing in Scotland with a small army, he gained the support of many Jacobites and marched south towards England. The Jacobite forces were ultimately defeated at the Battle of Culloden in April 1746, and the Young Pretender was forced to flee back to France.
