EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: Charles de Lorraine, Prince Charles, Count of Armagnac (1684-1751) 2. Description: This exquisite handcoloured lithograph depicts Charles de Lorraine, Prince Charles, Count of Armagnac, a prominent figure in the French court during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Born on May 26, 1684, in Château-Salins, Lorraine, he was the son of Leonor de Gonzaga, Duchess of Mantua, and Charles V, Duke of Lorraine. In 1702, he married Françoise Adélaide de Noailles, a union that produced ten children. The image showcases Prince Charles in a formal attire typical of the Ancien Régime, reflecting the grandeur and elegance of the French aristocracy during that period. The Count wears a richly decorated coat, a white shirt with lace cuffs, a cravat, and a three-cornered hat adorned with a feather. The intricate detailing and vibrant colors of the lithograph, taken from Roger de Gaignières gallery portfolios, capture the opulence and sophistication of the era. Prince Charles' tenure as Count of Armagnac began in 1702, following his marriage to Françoise Adélaide de Noailles. He held various positions within the French court, including the post of Grand Master of the Artillery and the Order of the Holy Spirit. His influence extended beyond France, as he served as the Governor of the Duchy of Mantua from 1714 to 1737. This print, part of the "Costumes Historiques de la France" collection by Le Bibliophile Jacob and Paul Lacroix, offers a glimpse into the rich history and culture of the French aristocracy during the Ancien Régime. The meticulous attention to detail and the stunning use of color bring the image to life, transporting us back in time to an era of grandeur, elegance, and opulence.
