EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph depicts the cocoa or cacao bean, Theobroma cacao, in its natural state. The image is an accurate representation of the cocoa pod, which grows directly on the trunk and larger branches of the cacao tree. The pod is oblong in shape and covered in a rich, deep-green color. As the pod matures, it transforms into a bright orange or yellow hue, signaling that it is ready for harvest. The cocoa beans are found inside the pod, nestled among the white, sweet pulp that surrounds them. The beans are flat, oval-shaped, and have a rough, brown exterior. They are encased in a thin, fibrous layer called the cocoa shell. The beans are harvested, fermented, and then roasted to produce the cocoa mass, which is the base ingredient for making chocolate. The cocoa tree, native to the tropical regions of Central and South America, has been cultivated for thousands of years for its delicious and nutritious beans. Theobroma cacao, the scientific name for the cocoa tree, comes from the Greek words "theo" meaning god and "broma" meaning food, reflecting the belief that the cocoa bean was a gift from the gods. This botanical illustration was created in 1887 as part of Hermann Adolph Koehler's Medicinal Plants, edited by Gustav Pabst. The detailed and vibrant image showcases the beauty and intricacy of the cocoa bean and provides a glimpse into the rich history and significance of this beloved plant in the world of botany and herbal medicine.
