This handcoloured copperplate engraving, titled "Cod, Whiting, Pollock, and Poor Cod," is an exquisite illustration from Friedrich Johann Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder (Picture Book for Children), published in Weimar in 1798. The meticulously detailed image showcases four different species of fish: Cod (Gadus morhua), Whiting (Merlangius merlangus), Pollock (Pollachius virens), and Poor Cod (Trisopterus minutus). The Cod, depicted in the center, is a large, greyish-brown fish with a distinctive hump on its back and large, protruding eyes. It is the most prominent and well-known of the four species, and is a valuable commercial fish due to its large size and high-quality meat. To the right of the Cod is the Whiting, a smaller, silver-gray fish with black spots on its sides. It is a common fish in the North Atlantic and is known for its delicate, white flesh. At the bottom left of the image is the Pollock, also known as Coalfish. This fish is easily identified by its distinctive black and blue markings on a silver background.
