EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored engraving, taken from the Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle (Universal Dictionary of Natural History) by Charles d'Orbigny, published in Paris in 1849, showcases two distinct species of wild pigs native to the Americas: the Collared Peccary (Pecari tajacu) and the Indian Wild Boar (Sus scrofa cristatus). The Collared Peccary, also known as the Javelina or the White-nosed Peccary, is a stocky, grayish-brown animal with a distinctive black collar around its neck. It is a social herbivore that roams in groups and feeds mainly on fruits, roots, and tubers. The Indian Wild Boar, on the other hand, is the Asian counterpart of the European wild boar. The female depicted in this image, identified by her smaller tusks and lack of a mane, is the Indian Wild Boar's common name, as it is often found in India. The Indian Wild Boar is an omnivorous animal, feeding on a variety of vegetation, fruits, and small animals. Both species are important components of their respective ecosystems and play a significant role in maintaining the balance of their habitats. The intricate details of this engraving, created by Fournier after an illustration by Edouard Travies, offer a glimpse into the natural history of these fascinating creatures and the meticulous scientific work of the 19th century.
