EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Albert Massard after an illustration by Jean-Gabriel Pretre, showcases three flatfish species: Common Dab (Limanda limanda), European Sole (Solea solea), and European Plaice (Pleuronectes platessa). The image is taken from Bernard Germain de Lacepede's Natural History of Oviparous Quadrupeds, Snakes, Fish and Cetaceans, published in Paris in 1825. The Common Dab, also known as the European Dab or Limande, is a bottom-dwelling flatfish with a mottled, speckled appearance. Its body is elongated and flat, allowing it to blend in with the sandy seabed. The European Sole, or Plie, is another flatfish species with a sandy-colored body and a distinctive, flat, oval shape. Both the Common Dab and European Sole are important commercial and recreational fish species in European waters. The European Plaice, or Pleuronectes platessa, is the largest of the three flatfish depicted in this engraving. It has a more irregularly shaped body and a distinctive pattern of dark spots and mottling. The European Plaice is also an important commercial and recreational fish species, and its population has been a subject of conservation concern in recent decades due to overfishing. The intricate details of the engraving reveal the beauty and diversity of these flatfish species, which continue to be an essential part of marine ecosystems in European waters. The work of Massard and Pretre highlights the importance of natural history illustration in documenting and preserving the natural world for future generations.
