EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored engraving, created by Fournier after an original illustration by Edouard Travies for Charles d'Orbigny's Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle (Universal Dictionary of Natural History), published in Paris in 1849, showcases two fascinating and distinctly different small mammals native to Africa: the Common Shrew (Sorex araneus) and the Cape Golden Mole (Chrysochloris asiatica). The Common Shrew, depicted on the left side of the image, is a small, agile mammal with a pointed snout, tiny eyes, and a long, bushy tail. Known for its high metabolism and insatiable appetite, this nocturnal creature is an important predator in its ecosystem, feeding primarily on insects and other invertebrates. Its fur is typically grayish-brown, with a lighter underbelly. On the right side of the image lies the elusive Cape Golden Mole, a burrowing mammal with a unique appearance. Its body is covered in golden-yellow fur, and its short limbs are adapted for digging intricate tunnel systems in the soil. This mole is a solitary creature, rarely coming to the surface, and feeds primarily on invertebrates and plant material. This beautiful and intricately detailed engraving not only captures the physical characteristics of these two animals but also highlights the rich natural history knowledge of the time. The Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle was a groundbreaking work, documenting a vast array of species from around the world and showcasing the intricate relationships between them. This image serves as a testament to the curiosity and exploration of the natural world that characterized the 19th century.
