1. Title: The Three Confederates of the Old Swiss Confederacy, 1307: Walter Furst from Uri, Werner Stauffach from Schwyz, and Arnold von Melchtal of Unterwalden This handcoloured copperplate engraving, created by Verico from Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World" published in Florence in 1837, depicts the three confederates, or Eidgenossen, of the Old Swiss Confederacy: Walter Furst from Uri, Werner Stauffach from Schwyz, and Arnold von Melchtal of Unterwalden. The Old Swiss Confederacy, a historical alliance of several states in the Swiss Alps, was formed in 1291. These three men, representing the cantons of Uri, Schwyz, and Unterwalden, played crucial roles in the early history of the confederacy. In 1307, they formed a pact to protect their lands from external threats, particularly the Habsburg dynasty and their bailiff Albrecht Gessler in Altdorf. The engraving captures the distinctiveness of each confederate's attire, reflecting the regional diversity of the Swiss lands. Walter Furst from Uri is depicted in a blue tunic with a red cross, symbolizing his canton's allegiance. Werner Stauffach from Schwyz wears a green tunic with a white cross, while Arnold von Melchtal of Unterwalden dons a red tunic with a black cross. Despite their differences, these three confederates united against a common enemy, William Tell and the Habsburg rule. The legend of William Tell, a Swiss hero who defied Gessler's tyranny by shooting an apple off his son's head, is a testament to the unyielding spirit of the Swiss people and their commitment to their independence. This evocative image offers a glimpse into the rich history of the Old Swiss Confederacy and the significance of the three confederates who played pivotal roles in its formation. Their story continues to inspire a sense of unity and resilience that remains an integral part of Swiss identity.
