EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate engraving is taken from Friedrich Johann Bertuch's "Bilderbuch fur Kinder" (Picture Book for Children), published in Weimar in 1792. The illustration showcases a vibrant and diverse array of coral varieties, each one meticulously rendered in rich detail. At the center, the Red Coral, Corallium rubrum 1, is depicted in its characteristic deep red hue, with delicate, branching structures. To the left, the Sea Fan, Gorgonia antipathes 2, is illustrated with its fan-like shape and intricate, waving tendrils. The Common White Stone Coral, 3, is shown towards the bottom right, with its compact, branching structure and smooth, white surface. Nearby, the Staghorn Coral, Acropora florida 4, is depicted with its distinctive, elongated branches, resembling the antlers of a stag. The illustration also features other coral varieties, such as the Noble Coral, Isis, and the Brain Coral, Nobilis, as well as the Madrepora and Florid varieties. Each coral is beautifully rendered, showcasing the intricate structures and diverse colors that make these underwater organisms so fascinating. This engraving is not only a testament to the artistic skill of the time but also serves as an important record of the natural world, providing a glimpse into the wonders of the ocean that captivated the imagination of children over two centuries ago.
