EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking image from 1519, Hernan Cortes, the Spanish conquistador, stands resolute on the banks of the Gulf of Mexico, giving the order to sink their own ships. The decision to destroy their means of escape was a calculated one, as Cortes and his men had already set up camp and were determined to conquer the Aztec Empire, now known as Mexico. The longboats in the foreground are either in the process of sinking or have already been submerged, surrounded by the smaller boats of the Mexica people. This bold move demonstrated the Spanish conquistadors' commitment to their mission, as they were now cut off from their original plan of retreat should the invasion not go as planned. With Cortes' leadership and the determination of his men, the invasion of Mexico would prove to be a turning point in world history. This powerful photograph, taken from an original print from Mary Evans Prints Online, captures the intensity and resolve of Cortes and his conquistadors as they embarked on their historic journey to conquer the Aztec Empire in 1519.
