EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph depicts Count Ernst IV von Gleichen (1252-1312) of the House of Gleichen, flanked by his two wives, Ingeborg and Margaretha, in the 13th century. The image is based on their effigies in Erfurt Cathedral, Germany. Ernst was a prominent prince and knight, known for his allegiance to various kings and his participation in the investiture and wedding ceremonies of the time. Ernst's first wife, Ingeborg, is dressed in a flowing, elegant gown adorned with intricate patterns and a high-necked, long-sleeved tunic. Her hair is styled in a simple yet elegant braid, and she wears a diadem on her head. Ernst himself is depicted in full armor, wearing a chainmail shirt and a helmet adorned with a crest. His cloak is draped over his shoulders, and he holds a sword in his right hand, symbolizing his knightly status. His second wife, Margaretha, is shown wearing a more modest, yet equally beautiful, gown with a fitted bodice and a long, flowing skirt. Her hair is styled in a simple braid, and she wears a veil covering her head. Both women wear jewelry and other accessories, adding to the opulence of the image. This illustration is from "Costumes, Artworks and Appliances from the Middle Ages to the 17th Century," a comprehensive work by Dr. Jakob Heinrich von Hefner-Alteneck, a renowned German museum curator, archaeologist, art historian, illustrator, and etcher. The work was published in Frankfurt in 1889 and is a valuable resource for scholars and enthusiasts of medieval art, fashion, and history.
