EDITORS COMMENTS
In this hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's "Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali" or "Dictionary of Natural Sciences," published in Florence, Italy, in 1837, we find a fascinating representation of two intriguing bird species: the Crested Partridge (Rollulus rouloul) and the Madagascar Buttonquail (Turnix nigricollis or Turnix nigrifrons). The illustration, engraved by Corsi, was drawn by Jean Gabriel Pretre and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin. Turpin (1775-1840) is celebrated as one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century, known for his meticulous attention to detail and lifelike accuracy. The engraving showcases the Crested Partridge perched on a branch, its crest proudly raised, while the Buttonquail, a small ground-dwelling bird, is depicted pecking at the base of a plant. Surrounding the birds, various edible vegetation and plants are illustrated, including Polypodium crassifolium, Lycopodium cernuum, Piloselloides, Phlegmaria equisetoides, Equisetum fluviatile, West Indian treefern (Cyathea arborea), vine fern (Microgramma), and graceful niphidium, among others. Some of the plants are identified by their common names, such as coarse tassel (Huperzia serrata) and staghorn clubmoss (Lycopodiella cernua), while others remain unnamed. The engraving also features various ferns, such as the water horsetail (Equisetum fluviatile), sphagnum moss (Sphagnum latifolium), and clubmosses (Lycopodium and Selaginella species). The intricate details and vibrant colors of this illustration offer a glimpse into the natural world as it was observed and documented during the early 19th century. This exquisite piece of natural history artistry not only showcases the beauty of these birds and the plants they inhabit but also serves as a testament to the dedication and skill of the artists and scientists of the time.
