EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by George Barclay after an illustration by William Herbert, showcases a delightful array of Crocus varieties as they were depicted in the Edwards Botanical Register, edited by John Lindley, published in London by Ridgeway in 1847. The engraving features five distinct species of Crocus: Crocus chrysanthus (1), Crocus nivalis (2), Crocus veluchensis (3), and two subspecies, Crocus serotinus subsp. salzmannii (4) and Crocus serotinus subsp. byzantinus (5), which were then referred to as Crocus salzmannianus and Crocus byzantinus, respectively. The first variety, C. chrysanthus, is commonly known as the saffron crocus, renowned for its vibrant saffron-colored flowers. The second, C. nivalis, is the snow crocus, characterized by its white, bell-shaped blooms that often emerge in the snow. The third, C. veluchensis, is the Iris crocus, named for its iris-like flowers that come in various shades of purple and blue. The last two varieties, C. serotinus subsp. salzmannii and C. serotinus subsp. byzantinus, are both autumn-blooming crocuses. The former, C. salzmannianus, boasts pink-purple flowers with a yellow center, while the latter, C. byzantinus, displays striking blue-violet blooms. This stunning engraving, with its intricate details and vibrant colors, offers a glimpse into the rich botanical knowledge of the 19th century. The female figure in the image, perhaps an artist or a woman admiring the flowers in a garden, adds a touch of elegance and charm to this beautiful representation of Crocus varieties.
