EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored steel engraving depicts the Cuviers Pike-characin, scientifically known as Boulengerella cuvieri, also referred to as the Ocellated Xiphostoma or Xiphostoma ocellatum. The image is taken from Robert Schomburgk's "Fishes of Guiana," which was published as part of Sir William Jardine's Naturalists Library: Ichthyology in Edinburgh in 1841. The illustration was created by James Stewart and engraved by W.H. Lizars. The Cuviers Pike-characin is a unique fish native to the tropical waters of South America. It belongs to the Characidae family, which is characterized by their elongated bodies and prominent dorsal and anal fins. This particular species is distinguished by its striking ocellated markings, which are visible on the sides of its body and its dorsal and caudal fins. The Cuviers Pike-characin is an important species in its ecosystem, serving as both a predator and prey. It is an adaptable fish that can be found in various habitats, including rivers, streams, and lakes. Despite its relatively small size, reaching only about 15 centimeters in length, it plays a crucial role in maintaining the balance of its aquatic community. This beautiful engraving not only showcases the intricate details of the Cuviers Pike-characin but also highlights the exceptional skill of the illustrator and engraver. The vibrant colors and precise lines bring the fish to life, making it a true masterpiece of natural history art.
