EDITORS COMMENTS
In this double portrait, we find the young Hon. Daphne Strutt and her step-sister, Vida Cuthbert, both elegantly posing for the renowned photographer Madame Yevonde in 1926. Daphne, later known as Lady Acton, and Vida, who would later marry Derek Schuldham Schreiber, are depicted as striking and sophisticated young women. Their matching plaits add an element of unity and sisterly bond to the image. At the time of this photograph, Daphne was the former wife of the 17th Baron Darcy of Knayth, while Vida was unmarried. The sisters' connection to the aristocracy is evident in their refined attire and the elegant setting of the portrait. Madame Yevonde's skillful use of light and shadow creates an ethereal quality to the image, enhancing the sisters' beauty and youth. Madame Yevonde, born Evelyn Mary Pickering, was a pioneering figure in British portrait photography. She is best known for her innovative use of dramatic lighting and rich colors, which set her apart from her contemporaries. This double portrait of Daphne and Vida is a prime example of her unique style and artistic vision. The sisters' story is one of intrigue and transformation. Daphne's marriage to the Baron Darcy of Knayth ended in divorce, while Vida would later marry twice, first to the writer and actor Derek Schreiber and then to the businessman and politician, James Goldsmith. Both women led fascinating lives, leaving behind a rich legacy that continues to captivate historians and enthusiasts of social history. This photograph, taken over 90 years ago, offers a glimpse into their youth and the opulence of the society they inhabited.
