EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures Chief Long Soldier, also known as Iron Horn, of the Hunkpapa Lakota tribe, Sioux, in the Gros Ventre village of the Standing Rock Agency in 1880. The Chief is depicted wearing a unique blend of traditional Native American and white American clothing and jewelry, reflecting the cultural fusion that was taking place during this period of history. The Chief's attire includes a beaver top hat adorned with a feather, a symbol of his rank and status, as well as braids wrapped with fur. He holds a long calumet, or peace pipe, in his hand, signifying his role as a peacemaker and leader within his community. The photograph was taken by renowned American photographer David Frances Barry, who captured the essence of a time when Native American culture was undergoing significant transformation. The image offers a poignant reminder of the complex history of the indigenous peoples of North America and their efforts to maintain their traditions amidst the encroachment of European influence. The Hunkpapa Lakota, also known as the Teton Sioux, are a sub-tribe of the Lakota Nation, who lived in the Great Plains region of present-day South Dakota, North Dakota, and Montana. The Gros Ventre, or "Frenchmen," were a separate tribe who were historically allies of the Lakota and shared a common border with them. The Standing Rock Agency was established by the U.S. government in 1868 to administer the affairs of the Lakota and other Sioux tribes following the signing of the Treaty of Fort Laramie.
