Decapoda - A Dazzling Display of Crabs and Shrimps

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph by Adolf Glitsch, based on an illustration by Ernst Haeckel from his seminal work "Art Forms in Nature," showcases a captivating collection of Decapoda crabs and shrimps. The Decapoda class, derived from the Greek word for "ten legs," is the largest infraorder in the Decapoda subclass, which includes crabs, shrimps, and their allies. The image features an array of fascinating Decapoda species, each showcasing unique adaptations and intricate designs. Among them are the Horrid Elbow Crab (Daldorfia horrida), with its menacing pincer-like claws, and the Sentinel Crab (Podophthalmus vigil), whose large eyes serve as excellent camouflage. The Gibbs Sea Spider (Pisa armata) may resemble a crab at first glance, but it is actually a type of arachnid, with eight legs instead of ten. Additional crabs depicted include the Angular Crab (Goneplax rhomboides), the Majid Crab (Lissa chiragra), and the Coconut Crab (Birgus latro), the largest living land-living arthropod. Shrimps in the image include the Common Prawn (Palaemon serratus), the Albunea Symmysta, and the Banded Coral Shrimp (Stenopus hispidus). This exquisite work of art not only highlights the beauty and diversity of Decapoda crabs and shrimps but also serves as a testament to the remarkable detail and precision of Haeckel's illustrations and the chromolithographic process. The intricate patterns and vibrant colors captured in the image continue to captivate viewers over a century after its creation.
