EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph showcases a diverse array of Desmidiaceae algae species, also known as Desmids or Desmidiea. Desmids are unicellular or colonial freshwater green algae, characterized by their unique, fan-shaped cells. The illustration features 13 distinct Desmidiaceae species, each with its unique morphology. At the center, we find Staurastrum furcatum (1) and Staurastrum vestitum (2), both characterized by their branched and ornamented cell walls. Staurastrum aculeatum (3) and Staurastrum paradoxum (4) display elongated, pointed cells with various projections. Moving on, we encounter Micrasterias denticulata (6) and Micrasterias trigemina (7), which exhibit complex, three-lobed cells with denticulated margins. Micrasterias melitensis (8) and Spirotaenia condensata (9) display intricate, spiral-shaped cells. Closterium costatum (10) is represented by its characteristic, ribbed cells, while Euastrum pecten (11) and Euastrum agalma (12) exhibit fan-shaped cells with intricate, pecinate projections. Lastly, Micrasterias apiculata (13) displays elongated, pointed cells with apical projections. This illustration, created by Ernst Haeckel and chromolithographed by Adolf Glitsch in 1904, offers a glimpse into the intricate and diverse world of Desmidiaceae algae. It serves as a testament to the beauty and complexity of nature, inspiring awe and wonder for generations to come.
