Born in Southampton, Watts moved to Stoke Newington in 1702, where he spent the latter part of his life. His contributions to the religious and intellectual world were significant, as he is considered one of the founders of the English hymn tradition. Watts' hymns, which numbered over 600, were groundbreaking in their use of clear, accessible language and their focus on personal devotion. Watts' theological works, such as "The Way of Zion," were also influential in their day, and his wit and humor are evident in his many essays and letters.
